The Toyota Wigo is an entry-level hatchback offering of Toyota Motor Philippines for the urban-dwelling young professionals or those looking for their first car. With a sporty front fascia, rear spoiler, and third brake light, the Toyota Wigo exudes fun and excitement from any angle. Known as the Daihatsu Ayla and Toyota Agya in other Asian countries, the Wigo consistently claims its throne as one of the Philippines' best-selling cars, year after year.
New in the facelifted Wigo are projector headlamps and LED taillights, along with an aggressively-styled fascia. Despite its size, the Toyota Wigo gives an ample amount of legroom for the backseat passengers. G variants have an iPod player with Navigation display and steering wheel controls, with audio taken care of by four speakers. Airbags, ABS, and seat belt warning are standard, while the G variant has an added vehicle immobilizer and alarm system. The Toyota Wigo runs on a 1.0-liter gasoline engine that delivers 66 horsepower and 89 Newton-meter of torque. It’s available in either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmissions, with five colors to choose from: Orange Metallic (new), Silver Mica Metallic, Gray Metallic, White, Black, and Red.
The Toyota Wigo was launched by Toyota Motor Philippines in 2013 and was slated to compete with the Mitsubishi Mirage at that time. It instantly became a hit because of its affordable price tag, pint-sized appeal, and value-for-money proposition to the budget-conscious Filipino car buyers. It also offers opportunities for many first-time car buyers to enter car ownership through a formidable brand name.
In 2017, the facelifted Wigo was launched in Indonesia, which gave the world a first look at what the Philippine-spec Wigo would be. That same year, Toyota Motor Philippines brought the Wigo into the market to jump-start its position in the market as one of the country's best-selling vehicles.
As a rebadged Daihatsu, the Toyota Wigo rides on Daihatsu's global A-segment platform that underpins Daihatsu and Toyota small cars available in the region. The Toyota Wigo in the Philippines is powered by an inline 3-cylinder 12-valve 1.0-Liter 1KR-VE DOHC gasoline engine with VVT-i, capable of producing 66 metric horses and 89 Nm of torque. These output figures are sent to the front wheels via either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Front and rear suspensions are McPherson strut with coil spring and semi-independent torsion axle beam with coil spring, respectively. Halting is taken care of by a 13-inch ventilated discs up front and drum brakes at the rear.

The Wigo is a cinch to drive in the congested Metro Manila streets. Its small dimension makes it a go-anywhere vehicle, even on tight streets where SUVs and pickup trucks won't dare go into. The steering wheel is a bit heavy considering its size but, it gives you more control when turning. In terms of ride comfort, this Wigo can absorb road imperfections better than its predecessor.
Out in the open, the Wigo is stable and wasn't hard to control. Although, at high speeds, road and tire noise will start to creep in, which is a demerit in terms of comfort when cruising on the highway for hours.
As an entry-level Toyota, the tech features inside the Wigo are stripped down to just essentials, and then some. Power adjustments are available for G trims, but the base variant doesn't have motorized side mirror adjusters.
The G trims also have a navi-ready infotainment system, which can connect to your smartphone via USB, auxiliary input, and Bluetooth. It does have audio controls are present on the steering wheel. The lower E trim, however, is relegated to just a 1-DIN stereo system.
In its refreshed design, the Toyota Wigo features an aggressive front fascia with the new signature Toyota "teardrop" foglamp casings. Across the range, the Wigo is equipped with projector headlights with LED line guide. The taillights are also LED across the Wigo lineup. The G variant is the only trim level that gets fog lamps and LED high-mount stop lamp on the spoiler.
All Toyota Wigo units sit on 14-inch alloys with the G variant getting the upper hand with a machine cut design. There are five colors to choose from when buying a Wigo: Orange Metallic, Silver Mica Metallic, Gray Metallic, White, Black, and Red.
The Toyota Wigo features a relatively ample cabin space even with its diminutive design. It can easily accommodate four adult occupants that fall under the typical Filipino height of 5’5”. The leg- and head-room for rear passengers are adequate but fitting 3 full-grown adults at the back seat could be a bit difficult. The Wigo also has ample trunk space. You can fit up to 5 regular backpacks with room for more.
As expected from an entry-level hatchback, the Wigo uses durable plastics for the most part of its black-themed cabin plus the seats are covered with fabric. There are also several storage spaces inside this small car, including door pockets.
What you'll like about the Toyota Wigo is its inherent fuel efficiency that could reach up to 22 km/L when driven on the highway. It's also nimble and easy to drive, plus its exterior design is something that still stands out in its segment even with the introduction of new rivals.
On the downside, the Toyota Wigo needs improvement on outside noise insulation. The infotainment system is a bit slow to respond, as well, plus connecting your smartphone is a bit problematic when done via Bluetooth.
