The Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover developed by Mazda that features the KODO design language. It comes in three trim level choices in the Philippines – the Pro, the Sport, and the Sport Diesel. The crossover features adaptive LED headlamps for the top-spec lights Sport Diesel, while the Sport variant gets an adaptive front lighting system. The base model Pro variant gets standard halogen lighting. The CX-5 comes with three engine options: 2.5-liter and 2.0-liter gasoline engine choices, and a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel power plant. The crossover is available in both all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive layouts.
The CX-5’s interior exudes refinement, space, and comfort with quality materials and high-tech features. Aside from the standard leather seats and electronic dual-zone air-conditioners, the highlight of the CX-5’s interior is the MZD Connect. It works with a smartphone for hands-free and voice-activated connectivity system to cloud-based apps, maps, social media, entertainment, SMS, and e-mail.
The second generation of the CX-5 hit the Philippine market on November 15, 2016. It featured two engines to choose from: a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated gasoline engine and a 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine. In 2019, Mazda Philippines relaunches a new gasoline-powered CX-5 for 2020 model year, which brings back the 2.0-liter, front-wheel-drive variants of the compact crossover. The revamped G-Vectoring Control Plus feature is now standard across the CX-5 range.
The interior comes with leather seats as standard for all variants in the lineup as well as dual-zone climate control. The CX-5 also comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Mazda Connect. It is paired to a 10-speaker BOSE sound system available in the Sport and Sport Diesel variants. The rest of the lineup gets 6-speakers instead.
The Mazda CX-5 comes with a choice of three engines – 2.5-liter or 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated gasoline engines and a 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine. The 2.5-liter variant produces 187 hp and 251 Nm of torque, while the 2.0-liter makes 154 hp and 200 Nm torque. The sole diesel variant produces 173 hp and 420 Nm of torque. All engines are attached to just one transmission option, a SkyActiv-Drive 6-speed automatic with Sport mode..
The crossover rides on McPherson struts in the front and a multi-link beam in the rear. Stopping power comes from ventilated discs up front and solid disc brakes at the back.

Despite the vehicle’s size, the CX-5 feels quick and nimble. This is also partly thanks to the addition of Mazda’s G-vectoring system. The transmission isn't afraid to give you power when you need it the most, as it will downshift willingly.
A strong point of the CX-5 is its handling prowess. The heavy but quick and snappy steering translates into precise movements of the vehicle when tackling corners. The AWD system also helps with performance as the vehicle is able to rocket out of corners quickly. To add to its potent handling are the brakes, while they are assertive, they aren't grabby.
The Mazda CX-5 features a 7-inch infotainment with MZD Connect with MP3, Auxiliary input, USB, and Bluetooth. Paired to the head unit are steering wheel-mounted controls along with cruise control. The 7-inch head unit sends sound via a 10-speaker BOSE sound system for the Sport and Sport Diesel variants. The Pro variant, however, gets 6-speakers. A heads-up display projected onto the windshield is also present but for the top tier variants only.
Like the rest of the Mazda lineup, the CX-5 features the KODO: Soul of Motion design language. The crossover features adaptive LED headlights for the Sport variants, while the Pro variant gets normal LED lighting. Auto on/off and leveling is standard across all variants, along with LED fog lamps. Rear combination stop lamps are standard on all CX-5 variants.
An electric sunroof is standard for the CX-5 Sport variants, while the Pro variant retains a normal roof. The side mirrors are color-keyed and are power-adjustable, as well as power folding with integrated turn signals. A power liftgate is present but is only available in the Sport Diesel as standard. The crossover rides on 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped with 225/55 tires for the Sport and Sport Diesel variants. The Pro variant only comes with 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/65 series tires.
Colors options for the CX-5 include Deep Crystal Blue, Machine Gray, Snowflake White Pearl, Sonic Silver, and Soul Red.
Interior seat material features leather for all CX-5 variants in the lineup. For the Sport and Sport Diesel, they both get power-adjustable seats for both the driver and passenger, while the Pro variant only gets a driver-side power-adjustable seats. The second-row seats have a reclining option.
For air-conditioning, the CX-5 has dual-zone climate control for the front and ventilation for the rear. The center armrest in the rear comes with two cupholders and two USB ports for charging. The rear seats are capable of reclining and folding in a 40/20/40 configuration. Trunk space starts at 800L and can be doubled once the second row is folded.
What you will like about the CX-5 is its fuel efficiency. The crossover during our review period was able to get 9.1km/L in the city and 26.1km/L on the highway. Another thing you might like s the driving dynamics of the vehicle. It gets its outstanding driving dynamics thanks to its chassis as well as the G-vectoring system present in the vehicle. The vehicle also has exemplary build quality.
Things that you won't like about the crossover start with the extensive use of piano black plastics in the cabin. These kinds of plastics easily scratch and in the long run won't look as good. The price of the vehicle is something that you might not like as it reaches past the P2,000,000 mark.
